The Book Club ‘s “Last Night a Speed Date Changed My Life” may not have radically transformed this lovelorn Londonista’s world – there were a few sparks but no earth-shattering moments of romantic revelation – but it successfully Changed My Attitude to speed dating. It was not uncommon in the early days of speed dating to find the female daters clustered together in the loos, bonding over a shared despair at the lack of social graces displayed by their male counterparts. And the venues – most often than not sleazy West End chain bars – were only conducive to romance after imbibing an unhealthy number of discounted spirits. The Book Club’s monthly speed dating evening was an altogether different affair. The dimly-lit, sparsely furnished basement was low key and welcoming, and strangers comfortably mingled before the official proceedings had even begun. With five minutes to pair up and chat, conversations just managed to extend beyond the repetitive “is this your first time? The Book Club has already established itself as the go-to venue for edgy, creative types looking for a dash of art, current affairs or philosophy to go with their Shoreditch Twats that’s a cocktail, not a local.

Last Night A Speed Date Changed My Life? 8 Quirky Ways To Speed Date In London
I arrived on the singles scene in with an aching heart and a lot to learn. Seemingly overnight, dating apps had shifted from the desperate domain of the overs to the new normal. Every man and his dog were on Tinder — or every man and his sedated tiger, all dumb grins and flexed muscles bulging out of Bintang singlets. Initially hesitant, I got into the swing of it soon enough; window-shopping for boys from the comfort of your couch sure has its benefits, and amongst the beefed-up bodybuilders and BDSM buffs, there seemed to be a few potential suitors.

Speed dating seemed like such a good idea, until I found myself stood at the top of the stairs of The Book Club in Shoreditch peering down into the unknown dating abyss. I took a hesitant step back, ready to retreat. She was right though. I blame the film Hitch.

People do crazy things when they’re in love. People also do crazy things after they have an early morning colonoscopy. One of my main concerns after I received my ulcerative colitis UC diagnosis was how I would be accepted in relationships — or if I would be accepted at all. This is a common worry among those of us with UC. We crave interpersonal and intimate relationships but are left with the worry of how a potential partner will react. A few years ago, I treated myself to some shock therapy.
This happened completely by accident — well, not completely — but changed my outlook on dating with UC. I had been living in Chicago for about eight months when my gastroenterologist GI scheduled my scope for mid-January. If there’s anything to know about Chicago in January, it’s a very bleak time. There’s next to no sunlight, it’s bitterly cold, and you spend a lot of time inside. When I was single, I’d mostly spend time at home, alone, with my cat and some takeout.
This January, I was eager to do anything with anyone, just to get out of my apartment. Being new to Chicago, most of my friends were people I had met at work. There was one gal I worked with quite a bit, and we became fast friends.

Speed dating has slowly but surely increased in popularity among mature adults, and it is now a great way to find companionship. What is it all about and how do you know if speed dating is going to be a worthwhile way for you to meet people? You can find different types of speed dating events , but the core idea is always the same. If two people like each other, then contact details are shared and you can organise a date between yourselves.
The best thing about speed dating is that it removes the pressure associated with dating. Speed dating gives you the power to pick the people you feel connected to. As you age, you become more aware of what you are looking for in a relationship and you know the type of people you click with. For people who know what they want, speed dating can be an ideal way to meet new people.
A conversation that lasts for a few minutes is often a good enough indicator to know if you have things in common with someone or whether you can get the conversation flowing. Therefore, you can save a lot of time and hour-long afternoon tea moments with people who you may not even feel that connected to by simply picking the people you liked talking to. Ultimately, speed dating is perfect for people who prefer the opportunity to meet people face-to-face, but who also like to meet plenty of new people.
For many, meeting someone in flesh can add that extra bit of attractiveness and ensure you definitely get along outside the Internet as well.
